It is the combination of the history of the Merlin and the background and history of the people involved in its development, production and realisation through the many aircraft powered by the Merlin that this book relates. I am as aware as it is possible to be of the momentous work done by the engineers, managers and workers of every description at that dark time. We are indebted to them all.
